Quote: "Weak messages create bad situations" -David Shrigley

INTERPRETATION

We thought about such things as, weak leadership, control, communication in relationships. We quickly became fixated on theme of relationships due to the range it gave us and we thought about everyone having some sort of relationship. We wanted to think broadly. all different types of relationships and the importance of communication.

Over the first couple of days my partner and I agreed this became overly personal for the viewer and we decided to make a more humorous and easily adaptable approach which would further allow us to create the successful interaction in a public space.

My partner and I had some good initial ideas when thinking around this quote for our primary research. We worked well in a team and I found it fun to bounce ideas off one another. We had an idea to use a scale or see-saw to visually show the cause and effect of this happening however we soon realised that this did not allow for much audience interaction and there was no pull, which is what the audience would want to connect with. We thought about creating a never-ending treasure map for the audience to follow or a sign post with many different directions however with contradicting words/meaning on the signs as well as playing with the elements and human emotions. As a pair we found it challenging to stick to the brief at first however once we started to step back, visualise and think about our ideas we had a clear focus on what we wanted our game to become and creating step by step plans for how that would work in interacting with an audience.

We concluded with an idea similar to a sort of magic ball or lucky dip with slips of paper which could be responses to our prompt questions. We liked this game-like concept as my partner and I were stuck in a pool of serious areas such as relationships and politics  which could easily offend general public. Therefore to make our project much more light-hearted and audience friendly we came up with quirky, wacky questions to ask our audience - such as, What would you say to the aliens if you could right now?

The crit session with the tutor, my partner and another group was really useful in understanding what we are missing in creating a successful interaction. This further allowed us to refine our project proposal further. We created a plan together from the feedback. We practiced with exactitude how we would approach our audience, what we would wear and where we would do our interaction. The whole presentation had to be analysed in detail.

We wanted to create a bit of beauty and humour in what our audience received as their 'reward' so the viewers get something back. We created small coloured green and red folded papers which our 'players' could keep as a souvenir in memory of the day.  We further created such characters for ourselves to play too, creating actions which would play a role too.

Designer influence on my project was Daniel Eatock's, Big Brother 5 promotion. He particularly influenced and inspired my decision making process when deciding how to engage and invite people to come over. HIs creation of a' giant version of the Big Brother logo, made out of boxes placed on a car park used as an interactive promotional stunt channel 4 invited the public to come a take away the boxes by telling them that some contained free televisions'. The joy brought to the audience who were actually able to take something home from the experience I thought was a great initiative to encourage people to join in. Most humans want something back for taking their precious time! The small gift like opening part to our design of the green and red cards was what our audience received in turn for their time.

The concept of the fortune cookie also played a part in inspiration:

I think our project was really successful. The editing of the video with subtitles was a great addition due to the loud noises of trafalgar square the video would have been hard to hear. The interaction itself was effective and made the 'players' happy and they engaged well, having full understanding of what we were asking of them. The result of asking one question to the different people made it easier to follow in the video.
