(morning - field notes crit/feedback)

I based my narrative flux project on this podcast which tells the story true story of the first seeing eye dog (Guide dog) https://open.spotify.com/episode/0XfhDDnPZ1k2p7s09XrCoG?context=spotify%3Ashow%3A6Cg6ZBmPpcq8GFgFdGLKxV&si=xCsK_ejfRnC44EYAfqiNdg

In Spotifys summary, Born on a farm in Switzerland, Buddy was far more than just an ordinary 1920s working dog. She was a German Shepherd bred to fight alongside soldiers, help police track criminals, and assist the Red Cross. But Buddy’s true destiny was yet to come—becoming America's first seeing-eye dog.

It was hard to break down the story and choose a section or perspective which I wanted to show through my illustrative narrative. At first I wrote these mini paragraphs summing up the whole story, which in itself was difficult. However when I kept going back and doing this It became easier to figure out where I wanted to focus on. I actually created few word sentences of the general idea of what I wanted each of the 9 scenes to encompass. From this, I made my storyboard - a rough idea of what I would want it to look like. Very rough. I didn't really like it that much looking at it as I felt it was very block-like or comic like. For the actual thing I will make it flow as in the concertina book it goes across the whole set of pages which will break the block.

I found it a lot of fun to play with the ink on paper. Creating an understanding for what a character should look like in a style I can build for myself. Today I planned and I created my characters and the landscapes for my concertina book. This was very exciting as I love using inks - the contrasts between black and white has always created powerful images. As first I was overthinking it. I started to loosen up and develop the movement of the character with the ink and a paintbrush. Having the task to create simplified lines and form was fun in the repetition of the characters. and I liked doing this while looking at my iconographic research to guide my frame of the 'ideal' it should look like, considering the date - 1920s, clothing , old photographs, was all very interesting.

20/11/2019 CONTEXTUAL PRACTICE

ETHICS AND SUSTAINABILITY

Glimpse collective: BIRDSONG

Campaign by Glimpse and Roll society o the protection of birds. (40million birds have died in the UK)

Get nature back into popular culture, created a music video of hand puppets - birds flying and dying - beautiful and accessible on youtube, Aimed at everybody, Singles of birdsongs, Uses different media, Reached no. 11 UK charts, only had 15% of UK all response however.

Meltdown: Photography exhibition

Exhibition, aimed at everybody - didn't reach everybody visualization of climate change, exhibition on vanishing glaciers, inspire action and behavioral changes.

My team response 'to create a creative piece/response to paring awareness to an area of climate change'.

Area of focus: Global Forest Fires -

  • Tunnel form where the audience walk through
  • Start of the tunnel large jungles and animal noises (lots of greenery)
  • Gradually gets warmer in the tunnel and projected fire on the walls
  • End of the tunnel shows forest that has been burnt away (black burnt down tress etc)
  • no animal noises by the end of the tunnel
  • Photo taken at the hot side (shocked expression) which can be bought at the end of the experience for a donation.

Most interesting I saw today -Second hand first, interesting to understand the journey of jeans and how much water is needed to make them. SO second hand clothing first is a good initiative to make people understand the benefits of buying used clothes first.

-App which tells you how much money you spend on eco-friendly companies.

was there anything you learnt that might change your behavior/decisions- buy more second hand clothing

realise illustrations with ink on paper - this is my final drawing of the narrative. I found this part very good. I like my middle section with the mountains, my peers also said they liked he way I used my brush marks to create the effect of small trees on mountains. I did this mostly from my imagination. I like the way I did the horses hurdling towards the viewer too.

I think my piece actually looks biographical for some reason. It is quite emotional, I think there is some sort of narrative here, however maybe some explaining would have been needed. In some areas I think I went to strong on the dark ink an I could have used less ink.

I quite like the way the viewer can't exactly decode my story as it leaves a certain bit of questioning and wonder to the piece.

positive for screen printing and photoscreenprint

I think I should have Made my photoshop section with more care - due to the errors in some places with not being as dark as it could have been. some lines aren't shown so I will now need to go over them which is disappointing and will effect the overall look.

MY CONCERTINA BOOK

Screenshot 2019-12-06 at 18.07.18.png Screenshot 2019-12-06 at 18.07.45.png

Some areas of my concertina book I wasn't happy with the outcome. It seems as though I could have used photoshop further to my advantage at that stage as the contrast could have been stronger and some of my lines seem weak. As I saw in some of my peers work they did a lot on photoshop. I want to learn more about how to edit and use photoshop to help me in these situations for next time
